SALUTING MAMA
When my mother decided to buy a house it meant that she had to accept a mortgage that was three times the rent that she was accustomed to paying. It meant that corners would have to be cut and adjustments would have to be made to the food basket and the 'look good' basket. More fibre

to a corridor to the right. “Here’s the elevator, the Silver Zone is this way!”
I got exasperated when she didn’t move. “Mama the nurse said that the Silver
Zone is on the third floor!” Mama walked off in the opposite direction, stubbornly insisting that the
Silver Zone was in that direction. Her cane made a rickety-click-click
