MAMA’S SURGERY

PART ONE
“C’mon Mama” I said, “Walk up!” Pointing
to a corridor to the right. “Here’s the elevator, the Silver Zone is this way!”
I got exasperated when she didn’t move. “Mama the nurse said that the Silver
Zone is on the third floor!” Mama walked off in the opposite direction, stubbornly insisting that the
Silver Zone was in that direction. Her cane made a rickety-click-click
sound on
the just polished hospital floor. Sighing and grumbling I followed her, all
this time muttering that I was not going to walk twice. I knew that we were
going to walk all the way in the wrong direction for the nurses to send us
back. We passed Blue Zone, Red Zone, Yellow Zone but no Silver Zone. I was
getting more annoyed as we went further and further down the corridor and there
was no sign of a Silver Zone.
A smart looking female doctor was
heading towards us, “Excuse me Doctor, are we going in the right direction for
the Silver Zone” I asked. “Yes” she answered. “The Silver Zone is ahead” I
interjected, “But the nurse at the desk said it was on the third floor of the
hospital!” She looked at me and gently said, “The Zones are just different
areas of Montefiore Hospital with each Zone having its own set of elevators, which
takes you to the different sections of the particular Zone”. Sheepishly, and
ignoring Mama’s ‘I told you so’ look, I thanked the Doctor and we continued
walking along the corridor. After about 5 minutes we saw a sign that said
“SILVER ZONE – VISITORS ELEVATOR”, we went into the waiting elevator and
punched the button for the third floor.
