One
of my favorite life changing stories in the Bible is the one about David and
Goliath. Here is a youth, David, who was responsible for his father's few sheep
in the wilderness, making sure that they were protected from the lions and the
bears. One day he had to deliver food to his brothers who were soldiers in King
Saul's army. When he arrived at the war camp he found it in a tizzy because the
enemy had a new champion, Goliath, and he was making mincemeat of the
Israelites. David asked what was the reward for killing Goliath and when he was
told what it was he got excited. This reward was not just money or a beautiful wife;
it was also EXEMPTION FROM TAXES
for the house of Jesse, his father. Now who wouldn't
be encouraged and tempted by this prize! Not having to pay taxes in your
lifetime and knowing that your children and your children’s children won't
either is truly amazing. Now we all know how this story ends. David challenged
Goliath, slew Goliath, and received the King's reward.Fast forward to today. The giants that threaten our lives loom daily. What do we do? Like the Israelites back then we can either run from them or we can point in the direction of the giant and tremble in fear. Some of us enjoy talking about the giants and we even make the giants appear bigger than they really are. Some examples of giants are sicknesses/diseases, poverty, marital discords, imprisonment, sexual immorality, adultery, etc.
Instead of challenging the giants and killing the giants some of us prefer to speak to the giants or pray for the giants to go away. Let me make it clear, if the giants are not slain when they first make themselves known in your life they will continue to haunt and taunt you. You will be mocked and jeered, not only by the giants but also by the giants’ cheering squads. "Where is the God that you believe in?" "Why is your God not helping you?" "You must have sinned" “Your God has forgotten/forsaken you!”
So how does one challenge a giant/giants? Do like David. Address the giant directly. "How dare an uncircumcised Philistine defy the army of the Living God?" In today's scenario, "How dare something that is not of God, how dare an unbeliever defy a believer of the Living God?" David used one stone to render Goliath helpless. It is written in the Bible, Jesus said it, that if we keep silent even the very stones will cry out in praise of Him. David already knew that praise can render the enemy helpless. David wrote many psalms. He knew the power of praise! David didn't just have one stone he had five stones! Yes, he was ready to get his praise on with these praise stones! When Goliath fell, when the stone connected to his forehead, David chopped off his head with a sword. Yes, you must never, ever, give a giant the chance to rise again in your life!
The word of God is likened to a sword, only sharper because
it is the sword of the Spirit. The word of God and your praise will always slay the giants in your life.
Do
you have a giant in your life today? Apply the word of God and praise to your situation;
you’ll be glad you did. Remember also that there’s a King’s reward for slaying
a giant. God will surely bless you and your household.
Anyway, I have some stones to
throw.
See ya!
